REVIEW: Zumba @ Studio 64 in West L.A.

Don’t let the pretty lights fool you, the front two rows WILL get sweat.

I came upon the Zumba class at Studio 64 via my cousin Pamela who happened to have tried it once and finds herself privy to their barre classes. When you first walk into this inconspicuous storefront off of Pico Blvd., it looks like a boutique. You would expect someone to sell you a pretty couture dress versus working out. However, this is most likely due to the patrons and it being primarily geared towards barre and ballet classes.

Their Zumba classes are currently featured three times a week: Tuesday nights at 8pm, Friday mid-day and Saturday mid-day. The most popular classes are taught by a gentleman named Carlos… “Really?!” I thought…

While the class was getting filled up, Carlos makes a grand entrance out of nowhere and yells a very colorful, “HELLOOOOOOO!!!” to the crowd. These are a mix of ladies on the Westside, not really the kind of rowdy crowd for cheering for an aerobics class. Carlos was relentless to get some cheers and thus the tone was set. “This is a PARTY!” he’d say.

The choreography was fairly easy to follow. He incorporated a lot more hopping, jumping and arm movement than I am used to and was heavier on the Salsa/Cumbia side with a dash of Flamenco and African moves. Needless to say, 30-45 minutes into it, I already wanted to die. My arms were tired, I was slow on the uptake for hitting the notes and next thing I know – a fan of crowd participation, Carlos pulls myself and my cousin to the front of the class during the hardest choreography… high intensity shuffling to Party Rock Anthem!

At the end of the class, I already felt the soreness sink in. Good sign! I’d definitely recommend this as a great first timer Zumba class to anyone in West Los Angeles. First timers get a free week’s worth of classes as well!

RACES: Running Zombies

Running in a Forest Filled with Zombies Seems Like a Lovely Route…

Want to add some fun to your racing routing? If so, you should check out the Run For Your Lives 5K event in Temecula this coming Halloween. This crazy 5k event not only has you running for a good time but also against crazy zombie participants.

The way it works is that you have a belt with flags that represent your health, and throughout the 5k run, you have to avoid these zombie trying to snag your flag off of you while overcoming obstacles that get in your way of the finish. The obstacles aren’t mandatory to complete, but by not completing them, you become ineligible for any prizes towards the end of the race. You do have the opportunity to fortify your health as the event planners placed hidden health “power ups” for runners to snag to boost their “health”.

To add to the fun, several routes were added to get to the finish line, so it’s up to you to choose the best route to get to your destination. Just be careful, because one route may lead to your brains getting eaten out of you or as their website says, “Choose wisely, or your 5k might turn into a 10k”. If you plan on participating, make sure to register quickly as the event is selling out quickly. Register at http://runforyourlives.com/socal-sunday-registration/ to get your ticket for Sunday’s event, as Saturday’s event is completely sold out.

Los Angeles Trail Running Route: Sullivan Canyon

Los Angeles may seem like an urban sprawl at times, but for those of you out there who favorite dirt or gravel to asphalt here’s a cool trail to check out:

Sullivan Canyon is part of the Santa Monica Mountains Preservation located in Pacific Palisades. Starting from the trail head, you can do an out and back for a total of 7.8 miles. Difficulty level: moderate.

The coolest part about Sullivan Canyon? NOT CROWDED. If you’re not a fan of the b-lister celebs at Runyon and happen to be closer to the Westside – this is a must for you. The path is not paved and not very well kept (watch your step at all times). Although there are no stand out sites to see (aside from a very cool rope swing one mile into the path and a seasonal small creek), it’s one of my favorite places to run. There is nothing contrived about what you get in Sullivan Canyon like you might see at some other national parks.

Want a more up close and personal look at the canyon? Good, because I happened to take my flip on my last trail run in those parts:

April: Nike+ She Runs LA 10K

It’s about time the women of the City of Angels got their very own Nike race… Later this month you can run a virtual 10K via Nike+, help a worthy cause (Students Run LA) *and* get to celebrate your 10K run afterward with a big party at the Nokia Theater in Downtown LA.

The 10k virtual run starts on April 27, 2011 at 4:00pm and runs are to be synced via Nike+ within the following 24 hours. A 10K race in the middle of the work week? Why not, I’m hardcore like that – I might even make it a late night run just because…
