Wine: A Potential Weight Loss Drink?

Will You Toast to Your New Diet?

When in training or when you’re simply trying to lose weight, you typically want to avoid anything with alcohol in it because of its carbohydrate content. However, with research, we found that some alcoholic drinks, specifically wine, have really good health benefits. As we know, if you get your daily dose of wine (and I mean a reasonable dose) it can help prevent heart disease and it even helps ward off cancer. That’s because resveratrol, the antioxidant in wine and grapes, does this. However, a study has shown that wine can also help you lose weight.

Now bear in mind that more research is needed to support these observations, but scientists have noted that when exposed to resveratrol, human pre-fat cells decreased by approximately 45%. This essentially results in the antioxidant making these fat cells “skinnier”.

As a plus to this study, resveratrol has also shown that it prevents the fat cells from releasing substances known as interleukin 6 and 8, which scientists have shown to promote the development of diseases such as diabetes and cause clogged arteries. Given that these observations are in fact supported through more concrete experiments, you can expect that having wine as a part of your diet will indeed help you shed that extra fat, albeit being an alcoholic drink and all.
