Training for your first 5k, half marathon, full marathon or otherwise? Every runner has his or her own pace, weekly mileage, that eventually develops over time and trial and error (especially if you are me). For those of you who are relatively new to running or are an on and off again casual runner looking for a more structured plan for an upcoming race… here are some good (free) online training tools to help get you started.
Couch to 5K – Also known as the C25K, this is a very popular ease into your first 5k race 9 week training plan.
10K Novice Training – Hal Higdon is a very well known coach and author of Marathon: The Ultimate Training Guide. His site also offers free 10K training schedules (8 weeks long) for “Intermediate” level runners as well as “Advanced” and “Walker”. Pick and choose what works best for you! In addition to the 10K plans there is also a section of various marathon training schedules here.
Runner’s World Smart Coach – A free online and highly costumizable training plan (you have to be a member of the Runner’s World site which only requires an email). I’ve used several instances of Smart Coach [...]

I’ve been wanting to do a mud run similar to the type of race they do in Camp Pendleton (tons of dirt, obstacle course and usually a small team sign up) and have noticed that a lot of new ones have sprung up in Southern California. Now this is definitely a racing trend band wagon I will gladly jump right on top of. The only question is – which race should I do? Check these out:
Spartan Race (February 26, 2011) 2nd Spartan Race happening in SoCal 5k trail obstacle course. This course had a cheering section at the HALFWAY POINT for extra torture.
Down and Dirty National Mud Run Series (April 16, 2011) 10k trail race with military obstacles. *Also the first NIGHT mud run in the country!
Irvine Lake Mud Run (April 10, 2011) 5K trail race with 8 obstacles.
Warrior Dash (April 2, 3 2011) 5K mud race with obstacles.
Muddy Buddy (November 6, 2011) from the Competitor peeps, two person teams, one bike portion and trail run.
Tough Mudder (May 28, 29 2011) Mud and obstacle ridden course with design help from some members of the British Special Air Service.
Camp Pendleton Mud Run (June 4, 5, 11 2011 – SOLD OUT) the [...]

In 16 days am I really going to PR my 1:05:05 10K from 2008. I know it’s been a long time coming, but might as well try no? Here’s to hoping. Santa Monica Classic offers both a 5k and 10k option and registration is still open.
I’ll be the girl wearing a running skirt. (What? Don’t judge me, I did a freaking Ragnar Relay in that thing!)

If you’re not doing the Ragnar Relay like me and my kick ass team and are looking to meet some really kick ass endurance athletes who are are also not on my team, you should get your booty over to the Westside and run a fancy (well it’s not fancy at all) 10K with some folks led by the legendary P-Dub or Peter Williams (aka LA Marathon social medialite) check out the Facebook Event for more info. Bummed that I can’t do this run since two of my all time favorite bars (Renee’s and The Shack) are both in the line up.

This video made my day! The very thought of “Eye of the Tiger” on any running playlist makes me cringe to be completely honest… However, the Mom and Pop lovability (is that a word?) of this race just makes it too cute. It’s one of my favorites in LA – can’t wait to run it again!

Google Map of 10k route.
