It’s about time the women of the City of Angels got their very own Nike race… Later this month you can run a virtual 10K via Nike+, help a worthy cause (Students Run LA) *and* get to celebrate your 10K run afterward with a big party at the Nokia Theater in Downtown LA.
The 10k virtual run starts on April 27, 2011 at 4:00pm and runs are to be synced via Nike+ within the following 24 hours. A 10K race in the middle of the work week? Why not, I’m hardcore like that – I might even make it a late night run just because…
To register: http://signmeup.com/sherunsla
$35 for students $50 for general public

Guess what next month is? Aside from April being the cruelest month… it’s also the month that Nike will FINALLY (cue Etta Jame’s “At Last”) unveils their new running sport watch with TomTom GPS technology to the public. They’ve pretty much been baiting all the Nike diehard fans since early on this year, and let me tell you, from what I’ve seen on the running blog and initial reports of usage, this sucker is slicker than Rick.
Not sure about pricing as of yet, but if they can beat the latest and greatest (and most painful) prices that Garmin has for all their newest launches, Nike may well steal some coverts (I know I’m ready to go!)

The Nike coffin. You can be like a samurai… live by the shoes… die by the shoes! There’s also a duffel bag coffin mentioned on the site.

This Nike commercial never fails to remind me of why I run in the first place.

Happens to me out on the trails all the time. Have to get back to that sooner rather than later.

Coming off back to back half marathons (specifically: the Long Beach Half immediately followed by the Nike Women’s Half Marathon) the last thing on my mind was following up with a third consecutive week of racing. Hey, how about a 10K at midnight? Uh, no thanks. How about a personal invite from Nike to be a VIP blogger for the The Human Race in Downtown LA? Wait, what? Even better… how about in exchange for taking part of the event, have a free pair of Lunarglides to test ride during the run. Like I would say no to a race anyway…
As tired and hyper focused on the next half as I was, when the call came from Nike to join the LAist folks, I was literally off to the races… in poor condition as I was.
I remember running the Human Race last year (my very first 10k) we had started at 8pm and Kanye West did a concert at the end. This year’s Human Race was a little different… You had the option of running the race virtually, there was no official timing system, and LA’s race started at midnight (ZOMG).
Race week: I just flew in from SF Tuesday in [...]

Is the Nike+ running site a lost cause? Having recently run two popular Nike races, I know time and money is most likely to be spent elsewhere (I also don’t have much of an idea as to how significant “running” is among all the sports that Nike covers). They recently re-released the Nikerunning site to have more of a social networking feel. That is to say, you can add friends who are also Nike+ users, create challenges, send each other messages, etc.
If the site was less flashy (ie Adobe Flash) and easier to navigate through, I would be likely to visit it more often. But because the UX is highly lacking (took me 2 days to figure out how to search for friends and your user profile isn’t public – people can’t add you if all they have is your Nike+ user name) and I only know a handful of other runners who consistently train with Nike+ … I would say I visit this site about once every two weeks. Probably spend 5 minutes on it.

OFFICIAL TIME: 02:54:29
“Run Like A Girl” – the big race!!! I’ve heard so many great things about this race from different people that I was bummed to not have gotten into the lottery early on. When I was finally able to get enter as a Nike+ user I was STOKED!
This is what I hear: Tiffany’s necklace, fireman, Nike oh yeah… lots of HILLS. They had changed the course of the race a bit from 2007 due to road closures. This year’s course was the toughest to date, including more hills with a steeper incline.
I ran this race as a back to back half after a faster flat course. So I was looking to take it as slow recovery run for fun.
Although a lot would say that the course was hard (it was definitely NOT a fast course) I absolutely *loved* it, ran through parts of the city, the pier, and there was a really crazy uphill mile at the mile 7 marker that went over about a mile and a half. Pretty nuts! The hill went over and went down towards a really fast downhill winding and right by the ocean. SO BREATHTAKING (or maybe I was out of breath?)
The [...]
