It’s about time the women of the City of Angels got their very own Nike race… Later this month you can run a virtual 10K via Nike+, help a worthy cause (Students Run LA) *and* get to celebrate your 10K run afterward with a big party at the Nokia Theater in Downtown LA.
The 10k virtual run starts on April 27, 2011 at 4:00pm and runs are to be synced via Nike+ within the following 24 hours. A 10K race in the middle of the work week? Why not, I’m hardcore like that – I might even make it a late night run just because…
To register: http://signmeup.com/sherunsla
$35 for students $50 for general public

On one of my recent treks along the bike path of the LA River, something happened to me that is an all-too familiar occurrence with other runners: narrowly escaped being run over by a disgruntled cyclist who later demanded I step off the path. Really? What happened to sharing the road? Especially if the cyclists are travelling in pairs (which happened to be the case that day). Needless to say, much like driving in Los Angeles the best offense is having a good defense. To help remind everyone what to be aware of while on the road, I looked up common safety rules in various running situations I thought would be helpful to share… Here are six rules that stood out to me as absolute musts:
Run against traffic – Street running. This was also a mandatory safety rule during the Ragnar open road relay. You want to make sure that you are able to clearly see traffic coming towards you which will prevent any sneaky cars hit you from behind.
No headphones – Street running. I’ll have to admit that I can’t run without music, so for anyone out there like me, just make sure that your volume is set to low [...]

I have to first of all state that “Mindcircus” is my favorite trance track of *all* time. Ever since Gabriel & Dresden started doing their reunion tour, I’ve noticed a lot of his solo tracks have really upped their game. This a very well done mashup by Dave Dresden. For all you trance runners out there, enjoy!

One of my favorite actors in the eye candy category, Josh Duhamel, is hosting a 2 mile fundraising relief run for Japan this weekend in Santa Monica. It’s primarily aimed towards kids (open to runners of all ages) and cutely named Josh Duhamel’s Tokidoki Relief Run. Runners are asked to pay a minimum entrance fee of $10 which will go entirely to the American Red Cross’s Japan Earthquake and Tsunami fund.
Runners will assemble on Santa Monica Beach @ Beach Parking Lot #1 where Ocean Avenue meets 2600 Barnard Way at 10:00 a.m. There they will register for the run and pay the $10 minimum entrance fee.
For more information: http://www.reliefrun.com/
For those of you in Orange County, who also love all things Snoopy (or pie). The annual Coaster Run 5k/10k is also this Sunday. Participants receive a medal, boysenberry pie and discount admission off Knott’s Berry Farm (yay!) Saturday and Race Day Registration are available.

This year is my first year running a competitor series event (best known for their Rock ‘n’ Roll races). As such, looks like I am running San Diego, Las Vegas and most likely Los Angeles. These not being an all-inclusive list of all the halves I want to run this year… I am already out a ton of pennies.
Even so, I am utterly *dying* to run Las Vegas. Why? This is their first year doing the 1/2 Marathon and Marathon at NIGHT on the strip! Seems almost worth the initial $121 registration fee.
When: December 4th, 2011
Where: Las Vegas, NV
Registration Link – Registration is currently closed but will re-open March 31st.

Given my current training plan my weekly mileage has increased in addition to the higher frequency of me passing the same bums who happen to inhabit the various overpasses along the LA River. Once I started ramping up my mileage, like a lot of runners I know, I almost fell into a rut of sorts with running. Same path, near same distance, same everything. Like all relationships, it’s important to tend to the one you have with running and approach it with vigor. That is to say, if things are starting to fall flat… (see where I’m going here?) spice it up! Here are a few suggestions and things I have tried or heard about that help keep things interesting out on the road.
Switch Running Personalities – If you’re an AM runner, try running at lunch or doing a sunset run. Love to run in the evenings? Then try changing things up with a run first thing in the morning. Even if you are running the same path, the time of day makes a huge difference in mood. Doing the neighborhood vs. treadmill running switch would also yield similar results. Seriously… role playing works! (Yes, we’re still talking about the [...]

Allow me to squeal like a little girl… I actually came across the Wanderlust Etsy Store because I follow the jewelry designer’s husband (who is also a runner) on Twitter. As of right now, there are two endurance distance sterling silver ear cuffs available for custom order, catered to whichever distance you fancy (that of course being either 13.1 or 26.2). I bought the 13.1 cuff since I heart the middle distance. Price range per cuff is $15-16 USD. Not bad! Also, Wanderlust Bling’s other non-running stuff is totally cute too!

If you are tired of using the same run of the mill ways of finding running routes around your neighborhood (word of mouth, google, running clubs, etc.), several new tried and true routes are as easy to find as clicking through a popular social media outlet. Here are a few high traffic sites (which are non-running and sports specific) that you may have left untapped. All of these sites have proven to be good sources in my own search for new routes to romp through.
Yelp.com (http://yelp.com) – Traditionally known as a foodie or shopping junkie site, Yelp is also a good place to find local parks, routes, and trails for running enthusiasts. Once you happen upon an interesting reviewer with enthusiastic trail running reviews, you can follow them for more information and places to run. You can check out elite Yelpers in the topic section “Daily Runner’s Log” to get you started off on the right foot.
Foursquare (http://foursquare.com/) – For hardcore social media junkies / runners Foursquare is a good place to track down other runners by simply “checking in” where you run and looking at other runner suggestions for routes and tips on that particular location. Several trails around Griffith [...]
